What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are popularly used to restore skin to its former youthful appearance. Some of the major signs of ageing include sagging and wrinkles caused by a loss of fat and collagen. These are naturally produced by the body and appear underneath the skin to keep it firm, smooth and wrinkle-free, but are gradually lost as you age.

Dermal Fillers act as a substitute for these materials, and are available in various injectable thicknesses to replace lost volume and plump out wrinkles in many parts of the face, including: Corners of the mouth (marionette lines) Nose to mouth lines (the nasolabial folds), between the eyebrows (the glabella lines), lips, chin and cheeks.

There are various Dermal Fillers available on the market, and we’ve chosen only the highest quality, safest brands of dermal filler, each with their own specialised benefits for different aspects of facial rejuvenation:

Juvederm

Juvederm is the leading dermal filler brand based on a non-permanent hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the spaces between the cells of body tissues. It’s one of the best tested, gives softer results and causes less discomfort and bruising. Over a period of time, the body gradually breaks down the filler and re-treatment is required. There are 5 versions of Juvederm available, with different versions for specific uses.

Juvederm Volbella

Juvederm Volbella is a filler designed specially for lip augmentation. Like other Juvederm products, Volbella is a non-permanent hyaluronic acid cosmetic filler. It minimises lipstick bleed to increase the volume of the lips, and reshapes and sculpts them for maximum definition. Volbella includes Lidocaine, an anaesthetic providing more comfort for you during treatment, and lasts longer than any other lip filler (up to 12 months). Dr David Eccleston was a lead author in a scientific paper published in 2013 following his investigative trials on the safe and effective use of this novel product.

Juvederm Hydrate

Juvederm Hydrate is designed to restore elasticity and hydration to the skin, for a natural, healthy glow in various parts of the body, including the face, neck, hands and décolletage. It replenishes Hyaluronic Acid lacking in the skin to maintain moisture and plump out the skin’s outward appearance. Juvederm Hydrate also include mannitol, an antioxidant that helps to prevent free radicals from depleting the Hyaluronic Acid, for a longer lasting treatment.

Sculptra

Often dubbed in the popular press as ‘The Liquid Facelift’, Sculptra represents a unique option for treating the signs of facial ageing. Using a safe, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra creates a steady and natural-looking increase in skin thickness, to gradually restore facial volume, smooth out wrinkles and improve firmness. Over a period of months, lines, wrinkles and sunken cheeks can all be improved and corrected with this unique procedure, leaving results that are especially long-lasting, up to two years.

Your Dermal Filler treatment Experience

Before Dermal Filler Treatment

Before you book a treatment, we invite you to visit our medically led clinic in Sutton Coldfield, with easy transport links to surrounding areas such as Walsall, Lichfield, Tamworth and Birmingham. Before Dermal Filler treatment you will be invited for a consultation with Dr David Eccleston. During your consultation at MediZen, we will assess your skin using our professional 2D and 3D VISIA Canfield Analysis system, which evaluates your skin to help us decide the best treatment approach to give you the best results and restore your skin’s youthful appearance.

During Dermal Filler Treatment

During Dermal Filler treatment you will be taken to our one of our purpose built treatment rooms. The treatment is a straightforward procedure, and the practitioner will apply anaesthetic cream to reduce any pain from the insertion of the needle. Depending on the product, the filler may instead contain lidocaine (a common anaesthetic). Depending on the concern being treated, we usually use one of several techniques:

1. Linear threading, where the full length of the needle is inserted into the centre of the wrinkle, and the filler is injected whilst pulling the needle carefully outwards.

2. Serial puncture, where several injections are made in a line along the wrinkle or fold to lift the wrinkle.

3. Fan or cross techniques are employed for filling out large areas (such as hollow cheeks) or for creating more volume in the face.

Depending on the extent of the area being treated, each session can take from just a few minutes to half an hour.

After Dermal Filler Treatment

You can usually return to work or continue your daily routine immediately after treatment.  Full recovery takes anything from a few hours to a few days.

Dermal Fillers are gradually broken down by the body over time. However, results we have achieved at MediZen on our clients have lasted for as 6 months to 2 years or longer. Repeat treaments will be required, however, in order to maintain results.

Dermal Fillers Side Effects

Whilst Dermal Fillers aren’t known to be harmful to pregnant women, we advise you to wait until after giving birth before undertaking any treatment.

Dermal Filler injections are a safe option for skin improvement, and you’ll find the treatments painless, or at most, mildly uncomfortable. Some slight tenderness after the injection will take 2-3 days to vanish. Rare reactions can include small hard nodules underneath the skin at the injection site, which normally resolve.

Is it Suitable for me?

During your consultation at MediZen, we will assess your skin and advise you if Dermal Fillers are the most suitable treatment approach to give you the best results and restore your skin’s youthful appearance.
